If you are someone who enjoys a challenge and would prefer to convert the likes of a van into a leisure vehicle such as a motorhome or campervan then you ought to be aware of some new guidance that was published on the Gov.uk website by the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) on the 20th<\/sup> October 2026. We mention just some of the things contained in the updated guidance but full details can be found on the above website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, the vehicle must have either a high top roof or an elevating pop up roof. It must have a minimum of 2 windows on one side of the main body of the vehicle being converted in addition to both the windows in the passenger or driver\u2019s side doors. The reason for this is so that there is enough light getting into the living space in the leisure vehicle. There must also be a separate door going into the living area of the leisure vehicle excluding the passenger and driver\u2019s doors. Do bear in mind that the window in the separate door is permitted to count as one of the separate windows contained in the main bodywork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a requirement that a conversion checklist is completed and submitted to the DVLA along with a number of photographs to support the application. These photos must include pictures of the outside of the leisure vehicle and a number of internal photographs. Furthermore, you must provide either a photograph of the VIN (vehicle identification number) or the number of the chassis that is stamped on a plate on the vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do bear in mind that there may be occasions when the DVLA require the vehicle to be inspected in order to consider the conversion request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
