The cost of living here in the UK has risen in recent years and it possibly doesn’t look like we are going to see an improvement in the short term. If you own a campervan, you may also own a family car for use every day. If that is the case then you may find it of interest and pleasing to read that the average cost of comprehensive car insurance has fallen in Q3 of 2026 albeit only by a small amount.
Every quarter, the Confused.com Car Insurance Price Index is published and the most recent one covering the 3rd quarter of 2026 reveals that average amount paid for the above level of car insurance was £713 per annum. That is a reduction of £22 per annum in comparison to a year ago that equates to a fall of 3%. Not a huge amount but nevertheless a welcome one.
Yes, the above index relates to car insurance but wouldn’t it be nice if there had also been a drop in the amount paid for campervan insurance as that could potentially be a double benefit to you if you happen to own a leisure vehicle and a car.
It is also interesting to note that such car premiums have fallen by an average of 17% in comparison to 24 months ago.
Motor insurance premiums are impacted by so many things. For instance, the age of the drivers, their claims history, how many miles they drive in the vehicle each year as the further you drive in your vehicle in a year the more likely you are to have an accident, where you live and the make and model of vehicle to name but a few things.
Let’s look at the age of the driver. It should not surprise you to read that motor insurance companies tend, on average, to charge the younger motorist more than the older driver as the latter is more likely to be a more experienced driver and less likely to be involved in a road traffic accident. For example, someone in the 30 to 39 year old age bracket pays an average of £843 per annum yet someone in the 17 to 20 year old age bracket pays an average of £1,860 per annum. That is a difference of over £1,000 per annum. The cheapest age bracket is between 60 to 69 with the average premium being £457 per annum.
Let’s now look at the impact of where you live has on car insurance premiums. The most expensive region is Inner London with premiums averaging £1,079 per annum. If you reside in North West England, premiums average £717 per annum. Those living in South West England pay an average of £550 per annum. In Northern Ireland, the average is £1,059 per annum. In Scotland, the cheapest region is the Borders at an average of £536 per annum. In Wales, the least expensive region and also the cheapest region throughout the UK is Central & North at an average of £517 per annum. As you can see, there is a large difference in premiums.
