If you own a campervan to take off in for a weekend break or a couple of weeks holiday then it is more than likely that you will also own a family hatchback car or a family saloon car for everyday use. If that is the case, then you may find it interesting that according to some research carried out by the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB) there is quite a worrying percentage of young divers who do not realize that it is a legal requirement to insure a car.
According to the survey, that involved in excess of 2,000 adults taking part, some 25% of those aged between 18 to 24 did not know it was compulsory to make sure that there is adequate car insurance in place on a car that is on the public road system. We are sure you will agree that is a worrying finding.
Perhaps this goes some way to explain why there are a large number of motorists in the UK who do not bother to take out car insurance. Another factor as to why some motorists break the law and do not insure their cars is due to the difficult financial climate that we find ourselves in here in the UK.
However, can you imagine the problem if you have no car insurance and are say involved in a road traffic accident. Who is going to pay for the repairs to the cars involved in the accident – you will not be able to claim on any car insurance policy if you don’t have one. Furthermore, you could be fined, banned from driving and get a few points on your driving license.
It is estimated that there is a £1 billion cost to the economy here in the UK every year due to uninsured drivers. You will no doubt agree that is a significant amount of money.
The survey also found that of those aged 18 to 24 a huge 52% did not know that not all car insurance policies are automatically renewed every year. Perhaps this is another reason why some young drivers end up discovering they are not insured.
