Motorists Driving Unroadworthy Vehicles Caught By Police Increase In 2024

As the owner of a campervan you will no doubt make sure that your leisure vehicle is roadworthy. After all, if it is not, then you are putting at risk yourself, your passengers, people in other vehicles and pedestrians.

You may find it of interest that a well-known road recovery business in the UK (RAC) has had one of its divisions undertake some research into the number of motorists caught by police driving vehicles in an unroadworthy state resulting in their owners receiving penalty points on their driving licenses.

For instance, in 2023 the number of motorists in such a situation amounted to 8,614 yet by 2024 that figure had risen dramatically by 4,495 to 13,109. That is an increase of 52%. We are sure you will concur with us that is a huge rise and is somewhat concerning.

On a regional basis, the region that had the most endorsements on the driving licenses of motorists for driving unroadworthy vehicles was Greater London with 1,765. In second place was Yorkshire and Humber with 1,373 and in third place was South East England with 1,167 drivers.

The region that saw the biggest rise in percentage terms was East Midlands with endorsements rising from 374 in 2023 to 700 in 2024. That is actually a huge increase of 87%.  In 2nd place was West Scotland with a rise of 47% and in 3rd place was the West Midlands with 44%.

In 2024, it was defective tyres that were responsible for the largest number of endorsements on driving licenses – 8,945 motorists were pulled over by police and found to have problems with their tyres. In 2023, the figure was 6,196. Defective brakes accounted for 1,190 motorists receiving driving license endorsements compared to 181 in 2023. We are sure you will agree that is a dramatic rise.

It should be borne in mind that the above figures just relate to motorists actually caught by police driving a vehicle found to be not roadworthy. The actual number of such vehicles in the UK may well be higher.
